Jakarta (ANTARA) – The action of turning off the lights in Jakarta, conducted on Saturday (April 25) from 08.30 to 09.30 PM local time to commemorate Earth Day, reduced carbon emissions by 77.53 tons of CO2e.

Lights were switched off along major and arterial roads in Jakarta, including at landmarks such as the National Monument, the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the Youth Statue, the General Soedirman Statue, and Jakarta City Hall.

“The activity resulted in electricity cost savings of Rp140,226,312 and a reduction in carbon emissions of 77.53 tons of CO2e,” said Dudi Gardesi, Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, in Jakarta on Monday.

According to data from the Greater Jakarta PLN Main Distribution Unit, the lights-out also saved 96.91 MWh of electricity consumption.

Gardesi stated that the activity is part of the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to educate the public, in line with the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

He said that the energy-saving action that was carried out is a routine program conducted by the Jakarta Provincial Government.

“The activity also refers to Gubernatorial Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Light Switch-Offs in the Context of Energy Saving and Carbon Emissions Reduction,” he explained.

According to him, the achievement demonstrates the tangible impact of energy-saving actions, both in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and lowering electricity costs.

The program will continue to be implemented annually, with the hope of encouraging Jakarta residents to adopt energy-saving practices as part of their daily habit.

“These energy-saving activities can start with simple steps at home, such as replacing conventional light bulbs with energy-efficient LED lights, unplugging unused electronic equipment, and adjusting air conditioning settings efficiently,” Gardesi explained.

These small, everyday habits can make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions and supporting a more environmentally friendly and sustainable Jakarta.
