JAKARTA – Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid stated that the expansion of the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to increase contributions by up to 3.67 percent of Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Because according to him, the use of AI technology as an impetus for economic growth is very suitable in line with the increasing need for efficiency and productivity in various sectors.

“Today’s competitiveness is no longer determined by resources, but by the ability to adapt to technology, especially AI,” Meutya said in an official statement quoted on Sunday, April 19.

With a strong digital ecosystem and rapid digital economic growth, Meutya believes that Indonesia is currently in a strategic position to maximize these opportunities.

“The value is now shifting, it’s no longer about resources, but our ability to manage data into solutions,” he explained.

However, he emphasized the importance of accelerating the adoption of AI in strategic sectors. Currently, the financial and retail sectors are considered to be more advanced than other sectors.

“Health, agriculture, and manufacturing must be accelerated because that is where we can create the biggest impact,” he said.

Along with the very rapid development of AI, Meutya emphasized the importance of strong and adaptive governance.

He emphasized that AI regulation is no longer an option, but an urgent need.

The government has also completed the presidential regulation on the national roadmap and AI ethics, which is now awaiting approval as a policy foundation.

“This roadmap provides clear direction while ensuring public protection from various AI risks,” said Meutya.

In the future, the government will ensure that the adoption of AI is inclusive, reaching various sectors and economic actors, including MSMEs, so that the benefits of digital transformation can be felt evenly throughout Indonesia.
