Hydroponics helps to sustain vegetables amidst hot spell

A hydroponic farming project is helping to sustain vegetable supply during the current hot spell, with tube wells installed to ensure a consistent water source. Sri Kulim Melor Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JPKKP) chairman Badrul Hisham Yaacob said they have taken the initiative to install tube wells at a cost of nearly RM2,000 to ensure a sufficient water supply, especially during the dry season.

“Water from the wells is pumped into storage tanks before being channelled to each plant through a system of pipes and automatic valves. Daily monitoring of water levels and nutrients is also required to ensure the crops remain in good condition. This approach has proven to be effective, as crops, especially mini cucumbers, grow well and produce better quality even in hot weather,” he said when met by reporters in Padang Raja, Melor, today.

He added that the hydroponic system uses a continuous 24-hour water flow, which accelerates crop maturity, including mini cucumbers that can be harvested in just three weeks. So far, 12 participants are involved in cultivating various vegetables, including water spinach, lettuce and pak choi.

Meanwhile, project participant Che Hamid Che Omar, 66, said that although the hydroponic system seems simple, it requires discipline, particularly in ensuring a sufficient water supply, as crops can die if not closely monitored.
