Four people were killed on Sunday in an accident caused by a sudden rupture of a penstock pipe used for power generation at a hydropower station in Fuling district, Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality. The rupture triggered a massive discharge of water, Xinhua News Agency reported on Monday, citing the district’s emergency management bureau.

The accident occurred at 9:05 am on Sunday, initially leaving two people dead and two others missing, per Xinhua.

The hydropower station involved in the accident is a Class IV facility located in Qingyang township, Fuling district, said the report.

Following the accident, relevant authorities promptly launched emergency rescue operations.

As of 6:50 pm on Sunday, the two missing individuals had been located and were confirmed to have no vital signs, according to the report.

Follow-up work is being carried out in an orderly manner, and an investigation into the causes of the accident has been initiated, per the report.
