China voiced strong disapproval of the UK’s move to bring British Steel under state control, stating it firmly objects and is deeply unhappy with the British government’s action, and cautioned that this step has eroded Chinese firms’ trust in investing within the UK, as per a Friday announcement from the country’s Ministry of Commerce.
The British government revealed on Thursday its plan to assume public ownership of the unprofitable steelmaker to preserve employment and protect what it termed an essential national asset. The UK government took charge of British Steel’s Scunthorpe site operations in 2025 following Jingye’s contemplation of shutting down the plant’s blast furnaces. Yet, the Chinese company kept ownership of the business, restricting the government’s capacity to shape its direction.
In a Friday statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce highlighted that British Steel had been running at a loss for years prior to Jingye’s purchase. After the acquisition, Jingye poured significant funds into the enterprise, thereby keeping it operational and maintaining jobs. The ministry charged the UK with ignoring Jingye’s contributions to the British economy and society and with invoking national security as a pretext to seize control and nationalize the firm.
It further urged the UK government to adhere to pertinent international norms, properly meet its commitments under the China-UK investment protection pact, deal with Chinese-invested businesses in the UK in a fair and unbiased manner, and fully protect their lawful rights and interests. The ministry pledged to keep a close watch on developments, back companies in pursuing legal avenues to protect their rights, and take decisive steps to firmly defend the interests of Chinese enterprises.
The UK Department for Business and Trade stated on Thursday that the takeover would secure thousands of jobs and safeguard the national interest by guaranteeing domestic steel output for major infrastructure projects and the defense sector. Business Secretary Peter Kyle remarked that British Steel now belongs to the British populace, with the emphasis on steadying the business, aiding the communities that depend on it, and fostering a sustainable, competitive, and decarbonized steel industry for the future.
An independent assessment will be conducted to decide if Jingye is entitled to compensation. The Scunthorpe furnaces are the only ones left in the UK capable of producing virgin steel from raw inputs. British Steel and its forerunners have manufactured steel at Scunthorpe for over 130 years, leveraging the UK’s advancements in steelmaking techniques during the Industrial Revolution. The facility currently employs roughly 2,700 individuals.
Jingye acquired British Steel in 2020 and reports investing more than £1.2 billion (€1.4 billion) to sustain the plant’s operations amid ongoing production challenges.
