May 2, 2026

ArcelorMittal Poland, the Polish subsidiary of global steel producer ArcelorMittal, has reactivated blast furnace No. 3 at its steelworks in Dabrowa Gornicza, according to a company press release. The furnace had been idle for several months due to difficult market conditions.

The unit was lit on the evening of April 28, 2026, and the first pig iron was extracted the following day. The restart followed extensive maintenance work lasting more than 70 days. Key repairs involved rebuilding the furnace with new refractory materials and modernizing the cooling system, one of the furnace’s critical components. Worn parts were either repaired or replaced. The total investment in the work was approximately 60 million zlotys, and the refurbished furnace is expected to operate for about four more years.

At the peak of the repair effort, up to 300 specialists from 20 contracting companies were working on site. Grzegorz Maracha, director of the raw materials division at ArcelorMittal Poland, stated that all work was completed safely and according to the planned timeline.

The reactivation comes amid a gradual improvement in market conditions in Europe. The company noted that the decision to restart the furnace was made following a stabilization in steel demand. Wojciech Koszuta, CEO of ArcelorMittal Poland, expressed satisfaction that the furnace is operational again, adding that the restart was carried out as quickly as market conditions allowed. He noted that high energy prices remain a significant challenge but expressed optimism that regulatory changes—specifically the CBAM and the new EU tariff quota (TRQ) system—would create fairer competitive conditions, better protect the European Union steel market, and help increase capacity utilization.

The company anticipates that the combination of these regulatory changes and a gradual market recovery will enable higher production capacity utilization in the coming quarters.

As a reminder, ArcelorMittal Poland has invested 100 million zlotys in a series of environmental and technical upgrades at its Dabrowa Gornicza plant. These projects are designed to reduce dust emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance production safety.
