COLDWATER, Mich. — An argument between two co-workers ended in a fatal stabbing at a Coldwater meat processing plant.

Officers were called to a reported stabbing at Clemens Food Group on the city’s north side just before 8 p.m. Monday.

According to the Coldwater Police Department, witnesses reported Brandon Eduardo Velasquez Chavez, 21, and the suspect, 20, got into an argument while working near each other at the plant.

At the end of the argument, the unnamed suspect reportedly stabbed Chavez in the back, police said.

“From what I know right now, the knives are identified by the employees, and they are given numbers, and they’re given to employees by that, and there was a dispute over a knife,” Coldwater Public Safety Director Joe Scheid told News Channel 3.

Medics tried to save Chavez’ life, but he died at the scene.

“You have a large industrial commercial operation, and you’re doing the best to try to save somebody’s life, and it’s a very challenging situation,” Scheid said.
