Malaysia’s jailed ex-PM Najib withdraws appeal on house arrest, local media reports

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 aprile (Reuters) – L’ex primo ministro malese Najib Razak, in carcere, ha ritirato il ricorso contro la sentenza del tribunale che gli ha negato la richiesta di scontare il resto della pena a casa, come ha riferito lunedì il media locale The Edge, citando documenti del tribunale.

Najib è stato riconosciuto colpevole di una serie di reati di frode in relazione al suo ruolo nello scandalo multimiliardario 1MDB.

– Najib sta scontando una condanna a sei anni di carcere dall’agosto del 2022, dopo essere stato condannato per frode e riciclaggio di denaro in uno dei numerosi casi legati al presunto furto di miliardi di dollari dalla 1Malaysia Development Berhad – un fondo statale che ha contribuito a creare nel 2009 mentre era premier.

– L’ex premier ha lanciato un’offerta legale per gli arresti domiciliari dopo che la sua pena è stata dimezzata da una decisione del consiglio di grazia presieduto dall’ex re della Malesia nel 2024.

– Najib insiste che la decisione del consiglio era accompagnata da un ordine di addendum emesso dal re che gli consentiva di scontare il resto della pena a casa, che secondo lui è stato ignorato dalle autorità.

– L’Alta Corte di Kuala Lumpur ha negato la richiesta di arresti domiciliari a Najib il 22 dicembre, una decisione che Najib ha successivamente impugnato.

– Najib ha poi ritirato l’appello senza la libertà di presentare un nuovo ricorso, con la Corte d’Appello che ha riconosciuto il ritiro, ha riferito lunedì The Edge, citando le lettere degli avvocati di Najib e del tribunale, datate rispettivamente 3 e 6 aprile.

– Gli avvocati di Najib e l’Attorney General’s Chambers non hanno risposto immediatamente alle richieste di commento della Reuters.

– Il ritiro dell’appello per gli arresti domiciliari segnerebbe un’altra battuta d’arresto per Najib, dopo che è stato incarcerato per altri 15 anni e multato per 2.Gli inquirenti malesi e statunitensi sostengono che almeno 4,5 miliardi di dollari siano stati rubati dal fondo statale 1MDB, di cui più di un miliardo sarebbe finito su conti collegati a Najib.

– Najib ha sempre negato di aver commesso illeciti e si è scusato per aver gestito male lo scandalo.
