Etihad Airways is expanding its network in China by launching new routes to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen, significantly strengthening trade, tourism, and connectivity between the UAE and China. This expansion, which includes a substantial increase in weekly flights, comes at a time when both countries are focused on enhancing economic ties and bolstering tourism. By adding these five new destinations, Etihad aims to improve access to key Chinese cities, support growing business demands, and cater to the rising tourism interest, cementing its role as a key player in the global aviation market.

In a bold move to enhance its presence in the world’s second-largest economy, Etihad Airways has unveiled a significant expansion of its operations in China. The UAE-based airline is adding new routes to five major cities—Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. This expansion will significantly bolster the airline’s existing operations, increasing its capacity to accommodate growing demand for travel and improving connectivity between the UAE and China.

The new routes, which are set to be rolled out between October 2026 and March 2027, will bring Etihad’s total number of weekly flights to 35 across six Chinese destinations, including its already established daily service to Beijing Daxing. By connecting Abu Dhabi with key Chinese hubs, Etihad Airways aims to further strengthen the economic, business, and tourism ties between the UAE and China, as well as provide new opportunities for both leisure and corporate travelers.

Strategic Significance of the Expansion

Etihad Airways has long recognized China as a vital market for both business and leisure travel. The country’s immense economic growth, its status as a major global trading hub, and its increasing demand for international tourism make it an essential destination for the airline’s long-term strategy. By launching flights to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen, Etihad is not just expanding its network but positioning itself as a key player in the rapidly growing Sino-UAE trade and tourism sectors.

The move also reflects the UAE’s broader goal to diversify its economy and reduce its reliance on oil by fostering stronger ties with China, one of its largest trade partners. Both countries have made significant strides in recent years to enhance diplomatic and economic relations. As these ties continue to grow, Etihad’s expansion is a reflection of the UAE’s increasing role as a global hub for trade, finance, and tourism.

New Routes to Key Chinese Hubs

The new routes will connect Abu Dhabi with five major Chinese cities, each of which serves as a strategic hub in its respective region:

  • Shanghai: As China’s financial center and one of the world’s busiest ports, Shanghai plays a crucial role in both trade and tourism. The city is a major attraction for business travelers and a key destination for international leisure tourism.
  • Guangzhou: Located in southern China, Guangzhou is an important center for manufacturing, commerce, and trade. It’s also one of the country’s most culturally rich cities, known for its historical landmarks and culinary scene, making it a growing destination for tourists.
  • Chengdu: Known as the gateway to China’s southwest, Chengdu is a vital economic center, particularly in technology and manufacturing. The city also boasts a unique cultural heritage and is famous for being home to the giant panda, a symbol of China’s environmental and conservation efforts.
  • Hangzhou: Renowned for its scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage, Hangzhou is an economic and technological powerhouse. It is home to Alibaba and other leading Chinese technology companies, making it a key hub for business travelers.
  • Shenzhen: Situated in southern China, near Hong Kong, Shenzhen is a high-tech, financial, and innovation hub. It is considered one of China’s most dynamic cities and offers numerous opportunities for business and tourism.

By connecting Abu Dhabi with these bustling cities, Etihad Airways is not just offering a means of travel but opening doors to a wealth of economic and cultural exchange, benefiting both passengers and businesses across the UAE and China.

Boeing 787-9 Aircraft: A Premium Travel Experience

To accommodate the growing demand for travel between the UAE and China, Etihad Airways will operate all new routes using the Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The 787-9 is renowned for its fuel efficiency, comfort, and range, offering passengers a superior flying experience on long-haul flights.

The aircraft’s spacious cabins, improved air quality, and reduced noise levels ensure a comfortable journey for all passengers. The 787-9 is also equipped with the latest in-flight entertainment systems and Wi-Fi capabilities, providing passengers with a relaxing and enjoyable travel experience.

This consistent widebody offering across Etihad’s network will also help enhance the airline’s ability to handle larger numbers of passengers and cargo, making it an ideal choice for Etihad’s growing operations in China.

Strengthening Economic Ties Between the UAE and China

The expansion of Etihad Airways’ network in China comes at a time when both countries are looking to deepen their bilateral relations. Over the past few years, China has emerged as one of the UAE’s most important trading partners. In 2025, China became the UAE’s largest trading partner, with trade between the two countries surpassing USD 50 billion.

The UAE has been actively working to position itself as a central hub for international trade, and the expansion of Etihad’s flights to China is a vital step in this process. With China’s rising economic influence, the new routes are expected to help foster even stronger business ties between the two nations, opening up new opportunities for industries such as manufacturing, technology, finance, and tourism.

The expansion also reflects Etihad’s commitment to supporting the UAE’s broader economic diversification strategy, which includes efforts to promote non-oil sectors like tourism, finance, and logistics.

Enhancing Tourism Flows Between the UAE and China

In addition to strengthening business links, Etihad’s expansion into China will provide significant benefits to the tourism sector in both countries. As international travel continues to recover post-pandemic, the demand for travel between the UAE and China is expected to increase, particularly for leisure tourism.

China is one of the UAE’s largest sources of inbound tourism, with Chinese visitors drawn to the UAE’s luxury offerings, cultural landmarks, and shopping experiences. Dubai, in particular, has long been a popular destination for Chinese tourists, and the new flights will help improve connectivity and make it easier for Chinese travelers to visit the UAE.

On the other hand, Chinese cities like Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou are becoming increasingly popular among international tourists, thanks to their rich history, vibrant culture, and modern attractions. Etihad’s new routes will make it easier for UAE residents and international tourists traveling through Abu Dhabi to access these exciting destinations.

The expanded network will also encourage tourism in the less-visited parts of China, such as Chengdu and Hangzhou, offering travelers a chance to experience a different side of the country beyond the major metropolitan areas.

Collaborative Partnerships with China Eastern Airlines

Etihad Airways’ expansion in China is made possible through its long-standing partnership with China Eastern Airlines, which has helped facilitate the introduction of new routes and increased frequencies. The two airlines are part of a joint venture that allows for coordinated schedules, seamless connections, and expanded network access for passengers traveling between the UAE and China.

This partnership significantly enhances the connectivity options available to travelers, allowing for easier transfers between flights and providing a more efficient and streamlined travel experience. Additionally, China Eastern Airlines’ existing routes linking Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi’an with the UAE complement Etihad’s new services, offering passengers more choices and flexibility when planning their trips.

A Commitment to Long-Term Growth in China

Etihad Airways’ expansion into China is a clear indication of the airline’s long-term commitment to the market. With the addition of five new routes and increased flight frequencies, Etihad is positioning itself as a key player in one of the world’s most important and fast-growing aviation markets.

By focusing on strengthening connectivity between the UAE and China, Etihad is not just capitalizing on current market demand but also preparing for future growth. The airline’s investments in expanding its network and fleet reflect its confidence in the continued rise of China as an economic powerhouse and a key player in global tourism.

The success of this expansion will depend on the airline’s ability to effectively integrate its services with local needs and market dynamics, but the initial signs are promising. With growing trade, business, and tourism flows between the UAE and China, Etihad Airways is well-positioned to thrive in this dynamic and increasingly important market.

Etihad Airways’ expansion into China with new routes to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen represents a major milestone in the airline’s growth strategy. The new flights will significantly enhance connectivity, promote business and tourism, and strengthen the economic ties between the UAE and China. By partnering with China Eastern Airlines, Etihad is also ensuring that its services align with the needs of today’s travelers while providing a seamless experience across both countries.

Etihad Airways is expanding its network in China with new routes to Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen to strengthen trade, tourism, and connectivity between the UAE and China. This expansion reflects the growing demand for business and leisure travel, further solidifying Etihad’s presence in one of the world’s most important markets.

This expansion highlights Etihad Airways’ commitment to long-term growth in one of the world’s most important aviation markets. As travel between the UAE and China continues to increase, the new routes will play a vital role in facilitating both economic exchange and cultural engagement, benefiting travelers, businesses, and governments alike.
