A group of diplomats posted to China began an immersive journey across South China’s Guangdong Province on May 12, exploring the region’s traditions, modern development and distinctive Lingnan culture.
The five-day program, titled the 2026 “Discover China Cultural Tour” of Guangdong for Diplomats in China, brings together 13 diplomats from nine countries, including Guyana, Seychelles, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Albania, Trinidad and Tobago, Croatia, Zambia and Dominica.
During the tour, participants are visiting cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan, where they will explore museums, historic districts, cultural landmarks and technology companies.
The opening event in Guangzhou combined cultural performances with interactive heritage displays. Guests were welcomed by a traditional Lingnan lion dance accompanied by drum performances, while exhibition areas showcased a range of Guangdong’s intangible cultural heritage traditions.
Diplomats sampled Chaozhou Gongfu tea, watched the making of Cantonese bamboo-pole noodles, and tried traditional crafts including Canton embroidery, Guangcai porcelain and Dongguan agarwood techniques.
Many participants also spoke with artisans and took part in the hands-on activities, turning the evening into an immersive introduction to Lingnan culture through taste, sound and craftsmanship.
“It allows us to experience Chinese culture in a very direct and personal way,” said Anne Lafortune, Ambassador of Seychelles to China. She noted that cultural programs like this create opportunities for dialogue and mutual understanding between countries.
A tourism promotional film shown during the event highlighted Guangdong’s many contrasts, from dense urban skylines and advanced technology hubs to riverside towns, traditional architecture and coastal scenery.
Several diplomats said the visit gave them a broader impression of contemporary China beyond official settings, especially through local culture and everyday life.
The program will continue through May 16, with delegates traveling across the province to learn more about Guangdong’s cultural preservation efforts, tourism development and fast-evolving innovation sector.
