Extreme rainfall and resulting landslides in southwestern China’s Chongqing municipality have killed nine people and left 11 missing.
The deadly deluge underscores the country’s growing vulnerability to abrupt, highly localized climate extremes as a severe storm system expands across central and eastern China.
The extreme weather struck Chongqing’s Yongchuan district late Saturday and early Sunday. A village in the Chashan Zhuhai sub-district, a popular tourist destination, was devastated by a massive landslide triggered by flash floods.
