A popular bakery in Pattaya went viral on social media after introducing a croissant topped with black hair-like strands intended to resemble pubic hair, sparking mixed reactions.
Saiwan Bakehous is known for its range of croissants and pastries and has become a favourite stop for visitors to the seaside city.
The proprietor, Arthit Chomsawat, said the unusual creation was inspired by another novelty creation, a “hairy cake”, a humorous design that had proved popular with customers. The hair-like topping was made of fat choy, a black edible algae.
The croissant quickly attracted widespread attention on Thai social media, dividing opinion. Some criticised the design as disrespectful to France, home of the croissant, arguing that creativity should be expressed in a more tasteful way. Others, however, viewed the pastry as a light-hearted joke and praised the bakery’s originality.
The viral creation also drew international attention, with French-based media outlet Prisme reporting on the trend and prompting further discussion among online audiences.
