Volkswagen Golf R MK8.5 launched in Malaysia – CKD 333 hp hot hatch, RM356k with VAP

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has launched the locally assembled (CKD) Volkswagen Golf R MK8.5, priced at RM355,990 on-the-road without insurance and inclusive of the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP).

Under the bonnet, the hot hatch retains the EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which now pushes out 333 hp and 420 Nm of torque. This is a healthy increase of 14 hp over the predecessor. Power is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, allowing the Golf R to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds before hitting a top speed of 250 km/h.

For those hoping for a manual transmission, the news is grim. Volkswagen has completely dropped the three-pedal option, meaning the closest you will get to rowing your own gears is pulling the gear shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

It is not entirely a tragedy, however, as the Golf R packs plenty of performance hardware to entertain the driver. This includes the R Performance Torque Vectoring system, which shuffles power between the individual rear wheels to mimic the sensation of a rear-wheel-drive machine.

Drivers can also toggle between several drive modes, including Comfort, Sport, Race, Individual, and Drift. The final setting does exactly what it says on the button, allowing you to easily go sideways and convert expensive rubber into tyre smoke.

Outside, the Volkswagen Golf R MK8.5 features a redesigned front end, boasting new aerodynamic bumpers with integrated brake cooling ducts and standard IQ.Light LED matrix headlights. The rear receives a similar nip and tuck, showcasing IQ.Light 3D LED taillights complete with dynamic turn signals and animated graphics.

To make your presence known on the road, the Golf R is equipped with a titanium quad exhaust system from Akrapovič. The hot hatch sits with an aggressive stance on lightweight 19-inch ‘Estoril’ alloy wheels.

Inside, the Volkswagen Golf R is equipped with R design trimmings for the headliner, stainless steel pedals, a leather-wrapped multi-function sports steering wheel, and carbon grey trim on the dashboard and front door cards.

The interior is upholstered in Nappa leather on the front and outer rear seats, complete with the signature R logo embroidered onto the front headrests.

Other interior features of the Volkswagen Golf R include a new 12.9-inch infotainment display powered by the latest MIB4 operating system, complete with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The driver gets a 10-inch digital gauge cluster with customisable menus and information. Other cabin highlights include a wireless charging pad and a 480W nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, which Volkswagen says provides drivers with “the perfect acoustics to accompany their drift sessions”.

For safety features, the Volkswagen Golf R is equipped with the marque’s IQ.Drive ADAS system which includes the following ADAS features:

  • Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcyclist monitoring
  • Adaptive cruise control with travel assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert with exit warning
  • Park distance control
  • Driver attention detection
  • Emergency lane keep assist

Prospective owners can choose from four exterior colours for their Volkswagen Golf R. These are Dolphin Grey, Grenadilla Black, Lapiz Blue, and Pure White.

The Volkswagen Golf R is priced at RM355,990, inclusive of the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP). This covers a five-year extended warranty capped at 150,000 km, five years of roadside assistance, and five-years or 75,000 km of maintenance. Opting out of the VAP drops the sticker price to RM337,790, though this reverts the warranty coverage back to a basic two-year unlimited mileage warranty.
