Nippon Electric Glass launches audio speakers in Japan

Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) has co-developed a new speaker featuring a glass diaphragm.

The company worked with Gait, a Taiwanese glass processing manufacturer, to create the GlaXfi BSP-24 speaker.

NEG will exhibit the product at Ototen 2026, one of Japan’s largest audio events.

The event will be held from June 19 to June 21 at the Tokyo International Forum, where visitors will be able to experience demonstrations of the GlaXfi BSP-24.

The speaker features the Sonarion diaphragm, an ultra-thin glass specifically developed for speaker diaphragms, the core component of acoustic devices.

Ultra-thin glass is among the world’s thinnest glass, with thickness ranging from 25μm to 200μm.

By applying three-dimensional forming and a chemical strengthening process to specially developed glass, the diaphragms possess the properties required for acoustic materials.

This includes a faster sound attack, which allows sound to reach you with greater clarity and precision, a low inherent resonance and fast sound decay, which results in minimal sound distortion, and an ability to withstand intense vibrations from heavy bass.

NEG entered a strategic partnership with Gait in April 2024 to jointly advance the development, manufacturing, and market deployment of ultra-thin glass diaphragms for the audio industry.

Gait handled the entire process for this product, from diaphragm forming to unit design, manufacturing, and sales.

The speakers cost JPY 390,000 ($2,435) per pair and are now on sale in Japan.

The Sonarion diaphragm also received the Technical Special Award at the 41st HiVi Grand Prix 2025, which was granted by HiVi magazine, a high-fidelity audio publication in Japan.
