TOKYO: Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, MOTEGI Toshimitsu, held a repeat telephone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, on May 22, lasting approximately 20 minutes. The call reiterated previous remarks from Japan concerning the ongoing critical situation surrounding Iran and Hurmoz Straits.
According to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, Minister Motegi emphasized the significance of ongoing communication at a pivotal time for Iran. He reiterated Japan’s commitment to maintaining a ceasefire and facilitating de-escalation in the Strait of Hormuz. Motegi also expressed hope that Iran would exhibit maximum flexibility and that negotiations with the United States would resume promptly.
The Japanese Foreign Minister underscored the necessity for the free and safe passage of vessels from all nations, including Japan, through the Strait of Hormuz. Following the passage of a Japan-related vessel, he requested expedited transit for all remaining ships.
Additionally, Motegi called for a swift resolution regarding the case of a Japanese national who was released on bail in Iran the previous April.
In response, Foreign Minister Araghchi “provided an update on the exchanges between the U.S. and Iran, outlining Iran’s positions;” however, no specific details regarding Iran’s response were disclosed by the Ministry in Tokyo.
The Foreign Ministry concluded that both ministers agreed to continue their close communication to ensure early de-escalation of the situation.
