TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Executive Body of Students of Indonesia (BEM SI) is set to hold a protest under the banner of ‘Indonesia Emergency’. The demonstration will be held today, Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

The notification of the protest is stated in an official letter from BEM SI West Java signed by the Regional Coordinator of BEM SI West Java, Muhamad Risaldi. The official invitation letter conveys that the location of the demonstration will be at the West Java Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) office. “The demonstration will be held from 14:00 until end,” as stated in the letter.

The demands of the BEM SI West Java demonstration consist of seven demands. The first demand is to urge the government to immediately lower fuel prices and stabilize the value of the rupiah. The second demand is for the government to immediately rescue the state budget (APBN). Third, improve presidential communication.

Fourth, the students demand a total evaluation of the free nutritional meal program (MBG) and village cooperatives or red and white cooperatives. Fifth, revoke the TNI Law and Police Law. Sixth, they demand a total evaluation of the incompetent red and white cabinet. Lastly, they demand the upholding of human rights and combating impunity.

The wave of student demonstrations initially began on Friday, June 12, 2026. The movement was led by the Student Body of the University of Indonesia along with other student elements in the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (HI) area. The opening movement organized by UI was titled “Save Indonesia”.

A subsequent wave of protests was conducted on Monday, June 15, 2026. The demonstrations continued to target Central Jakarta at Jalan Merdeka Selatan (Monas) and the DPR/MPR Building. Another wave of student demonstrations also intensified outside Jakarta, such as in Medan, Palembang, Surabaya, and Makassar.

The previous demands of the students were more or less similar to what was demanded by the BEM SI West Java students. All of them want the government to lower fuel and staple food prices. Urging for a total evaluation or cessation of the MBG project and the development of the Red and White Village Cooperative.

Students also reject militarism in civilian areas and review the TNI Law and Police Law. They also demand the Indonesian government to stabilize the value of the rupiah and halt the wastage of APBN.
