“The KNMP program forms part of the national strategy to foster a sustainable ecosystem for the blue economy,” said Marine Affairs and Fisheries Deputy Minister Didit Herdiawan Ashaf in a statement on Saturday.
He remarked on the initiative after visiting the Randu Putih Fish Auction Center in Probolinggo District, East Java, on Friday.
The official made the visit alongside District Head Mohammad Haris to review a development site in the area.
Ashaf explained that fishing villages developed under the program will be equipped with supporting facilities such as boat moorings and fish landing points.
The infrastructure will also include cold storage and fishermen gathering halls to support the local processing industry.
“The program is expected to spur the emergence of decent, clean, healthy, and productive fishing villages,” the deputy minister stated.
He noted that coastal communities can uplift their welfare through these upgrades which also include sea walls to shield homes from tidal flooding.
The government envisions empowered villages transforming coastal regions into key drivers of local economies to stimulate equitable growth across the archipelago.
District Head Haris described the program as a concrete effort involving various stakeholders to fully capitalize on local resources and potential.
“Out of four fishing village sites we proposed, two have begun development in Randu Putih Village and Kalibunti Village,” he said.
He underscored that the Randu Putih site is being developed as a modern and well organized village integrated with a digital economy system.
“This approach will certainly boost the local economy,” Haris stated.
The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has announced a target to complete development at 100 locations nationwide by May 2026.
The administration has a broader plan to develop 1,000 villages to ensure comprehensive support for Indonesia’s maritime communities.
