Indonesia has competitive adventure tourism, Ministry says

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has a competitive advantage as an adventure tourism destination, Acting Deputy for Event Organizer Development at the Ministry of Tourism, Hafiz Agung Rifai, said at the launch of Explorex 2027 here on Tuesday (July 14).

“Indonesia is one of the few countries capable of offering a complete adventure experience through land, sea, and air activities,” he said as quoted in the ministry’s press statement confirmed here on Wednesday.

Rifai pointed out that Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands and diverse landscapes. Therefore, Indonesia can offer a comprehensive adventure tourism experience with regions encompassing mountains, tropical forests, rivers, lakes, beaches, and seas rich in biodiversity.

This potential allows Indonesia to optimise the development of tourism services, which are currently shifting toward experience-based tourism and special interest tourism, such as adventure, wellness, and sports tourism.

Rifai mentioned that experience-based tourism services are among those experiencing rapid growth, according to studies by international organisations, such as UN Tourism and the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).

The Ministry is striving to encourage the development of experience-based tourism services, he added, including by supporting outdoor activities.

Throughout the 2026, the Tourism Ministry has supported more than 30 outdoor events, including trail running, horse racing, motorsports, cycling, open water swimming, and fishing competitions.

Holding exhibitions like Explorex aligned with the government’s efforts to boost experience-based tourism services, including adventure tourism.

The exhibition also offered a space for collaboration among the government, business players, and communities to promote innovation and sustainable growth in the adventure tourism industry.

Meanwhile, Founder of Skygears Indonesia, Harry Suliztiarto, emphasised the development of the adventure tourism business must go hand in hand with efforts to improve safety and security in tourism activities, including human resource training.
