Indonesia is developing advanced technology to produce virus-free garlic seeds as part of efforts to strengthen domestic agriculture and improve crop productivity, as reported by
ANTARA.

The research initiative focuses on creating healthy planting materials that can maintain the performance of improved garlic varieties over the long term. Scientists are working on methods to remove viruses from garlic seed material, develop prototype treatment systems and assess how the technology affects plant growth and productivity.

The next stages of the project will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of virus elimination methods, including their ability to reduce virus levels while maintaining plant growth, productivity and resistance to other agricultural threats.

The two-year research programme will begin with laboratory validation and the development of a small-scale virus elimination prototype. Further trials will examine the performance of virus-free plants under field conditions and support the wider application of the technology among seed producers.

Beyond virus elimination, the initiative also includes the development of improved garlic varieties, including large-bulb softneck and hardneck types, cultivars adapted to mid-altitude regions, technologies to improve dormancy management, genetic resource databases and standards for producing high-quality planting materials.
