UK foreign minister due to visit China and India to discuss global issues

LONDRA, 31 maggio (Reuters) – Il ministro degli esteri britannico Yvette Cooper si recherà in Cina lunedì e poi in India nel corso della settimana. Le visite si concentreranno su questioni globali, dallo Stretto di Hormuz alla guerra tra Russia e Ucraina, fino alla recente epidemia di Ebola.

La Cooper incontrerà il suo omologo cinese Wang Yi e il vicepresidente cinese Han Zheng il 2 giugno, prima di recarsi un giorno dopo nel polo tecnologico meridionale di Shenzhen per un programma incentrato sulla scienza e la tecnologia, ha dichiarato il governo.

I piani, annunciati domenica, arrivano dopo che il mese scorso la Reuters aveva riferito della visita, citando tre fonti.

Il primo ministro Keir Starmer e il leader cinese Xi Jinping hanno salutato un ripristino dei legami durante la visita del leader britannico in Cina a gennaio, impegnandosi a una maggiore cooperazione in materia di commercio, investimenti e tecnologia a vantaggio reciproco dei due Paesi.

TRIP PER FOCALIZZARE LE SFIDE GLOBALI

Starmer, che sta lottando contro alcuni dei peggiori indici di popolarità di qualsiasi altro leader in patria, è stato il primo primo ministro britannico a visitare la Cina in otto anni, con il suo governo laburista di centro-sinistra che ha fatto del miglioramento delle relazioni con la Cina una priorità.

Il viaggio di Cooper in Cina e in India – la seconda e la sesta economia mondiale – avviene in un momento di forti tensioni geopolitiche, di impennata dei prezzi del petrolio in seguito alla guerra tra Stati Uniti e Israele contro l’Iran, e in un momento in cui il governo britannico ha deciso di migliorare le relazioni con la Cina.Il 4 giugno, la Presidente dovrebbe recarsi in India per incontrare il Ministro degli Affari Esteri S. Jaishankar, nonché imprenditori, accademici e partner governativi che stanno portando avanti l’iniziativa UK-India Vision 2035.

I due Paesi hanno firmato l’anno scorso un accordo di libero scambio che mirava a incrementare il commercio bilaterale e a migliorare l’accesso al mercato in tutti i settori. Ma il mese scorso il segretario al commercio indiano Rajesh Agrawal ha dichiarato che la sua attuazione ha incontrato un ostacolo a causa dei nuovi limiti all’importazione di acciaio imposti da Londra.

Il governo britannico ha dichiarato che i prossimi impegni di Cooper “con queste due grandi potenze dovrebbero essere incentrati sull’affrontare le sfide globali più significative”.
