Hong Kong emergency services are searching for a missing 59-year-old man who is suspected of drowning during the swimming leg of a triathlon in the city amid an amber rainstorm warning.

Police told the South China Morning Post that they received a report at 7.57am on Sunday that a male participant of the 2026 Summer Triathlon Challenge at the Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Centre in Tai Po had entered the water during the swimming segment of the race but failed to resurface.

The SCMP learned that the missing man entered the water at around 6.12am but did not return to shore.

Marine police searched the area while Fire Services Department divers also entered the water to look for him.

The man went into water two minutes after the Hong Kong Observatory issued the amber rainstorm warning at 6.10am, the lowest of the three-tier system, and cautioned of more squally thunderstorms with frequent lightning on Sunday morning.

The forecaster said that more than 30mm (3cm) of rain was recorded in most parts of the city, with some areas exceeding 50mm.
