April 30 (Asia Today) — China will take over the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council in May, saying it will promote political solutions to international conflicts and strengthen multilateralism amid prolonged global instability.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular news briefing Thursday that China will approach the role with a “responsible and constructive attitude” and work to strengthen unity and cooperation within the Security Council.

“The current international situation is marked by overlapping turmoil and repeated geopolitical conflicts,” Lin said. “The Security Council bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and its role is drawing attention.”

Lin said China will maintain a fair and open posture and promote political solutions through practical action.

“We will faithfully fulfill the duties entrusted by the U.N. Charter,” he said.

Lin added that China expects the international community to support its work and cooperate on the Security Council’s May agenda to practice “true multilateralism” and contribute more to peace and development.

The Security Council presidency rotates among its 15 member states. The president usually oversees meetings, sets agendas and manages council operations.
