India on Friday said it is “deeply concerned” over the situation in Lebanon as Israeli attacks have killed hundreds over the past two days, triggering global outcry.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of a large number of civilian casualties that have been reported in Lebanon,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday.

As a troop contributing country to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that “is invested in Lebanon’s peace and security,” the ministry said “the direction of events is very disturbing.”

At least three Indonesian peacekeepers from the UNIFIL were also killed in Lebanon in March amid attacks by Israel, with Jakarta seeking a transparent probe.

“India has always emphasized the protection of civilians as the foremost priority,” said Jaiswal, adding: “Observing international law and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is essential.”

Since the Pakistan-mediated two-week US-Iran ceasefire took effect, Israel has killed 303 people over the past two days in Lebanon, triggering global outcry as all eyes are set on Islamabad for Washington-Tehran talks, expected to begin on Saturday.

While Pakistani mediators and Tehran said the truce also covered Lebanon, Washington and Tel Aviv have denied it.

According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Iran has no plans to attend peace talks with the US, until Israel stops bombing Lebanon.

The expanded Israeli offensive on Lebanon since March 2 has killed 1,888 people and wounded 6,092 others, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
