A young man believed to be in his early 20s has died following an alleged assault by security personnel at a Chinese-owned illegal mining site at Tigarikrom, near Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality.

Eyewitnesses say the victim reportedly went to the site along China Road on the night of Wednesday, April 8, with the intention of stealing a liquid substance suspected to be diesel. He was allegedly arrested by security guards at the site, subjected to severe beatings, and restrained.

The Assembly Member for the Tigarikrom Electoral Area, Evans Addie, confirmed the incident and indicated that the young man sustained serious injuries during the assault. According to sources, he was released the following morning after intervention by local elders but died shortly after being taken home.

The incident triggered anger among residents in Tigarikrom and nearby Zongo communities, with some youth reportedly storming the mining site, burning two excavators and seizing another. Police were subsequently deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further disturbances.

The family of the deceased has indicated that burial arrangements will be carried out immediately in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but investigations are expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The development has renewed concerns about lawlessness, alleged human rights abuses, and rising tensions linked to illegal mining activities in parts of the country.
