PENANG has unveiled a domestic tourism campaign entitled “Fall in Love with Penang,” aimed at wooing Malaysians to rediscover the old but updated tourism products, with more emphasis now on the eco-tourism products on the Prai mainland.

State executive councillor for tourism, Wong Hon Wai, launched the initiative, aimed at breaching the mark of arrivals for domestic tourists, as the Visit Malaysia Year has now been extended till next year.

Wong said that the campaign was previously launched at overseas travel fairs, but it was fine-tuned now to cater for local tourists.

It is an update of the evergreen range of tourism products and services, which the state was famed for, Wong said at the launch in the Capri by Fraser Hotel recently.

The main attractions listed are the updated version of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Penang Hill, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, food culture, festivals, arts, nature and biodiversity of the state’s forest, trekking trails and beaches.

“We want the tourists to sample the updated and renovated parts of our tourism landmarks and redouble their experiences about Penang,” said Wong.

There was also a launch of the new look portal of Penang Global Tourism, which is enhanced with the participation of the state’s key opinion leaders (KOL) online.

Wong said that based on the paid accommodation survey, two localities in Penang are among the best places to stay in the country.

They are Batu Feringghi, which took second spot and Tanjung Bungah, which finished fifth.

The others nationwide are Genting Highlands as number one, Sepang as number three and Langkawi finished fourth.

Wong also said that domestic tourism can help fuel arrivals in view of the possible impact from the overseas market due to the prolonged Middle East conflict. – August 6, 2026.
