Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei and Kenya’s Ambassador to China Willy Bett unveil the plaque during the official opening of Kenya’s Consulate General in Guangzhou, China, on August 4, 2026. /HANDOUT

Kenya has officially opened a Consulate General in Guangzhou, China, in a move aimed at strengthening trade relations, advancing economic diplomacy and bringing consular services closer to Kenyans living in southern China.

The new diplomatic mission, inaugurated by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei, will serve as Kenya’s gateway to one of China’s most economically vibrant regions while supporting trade, investment and the country’s growing diaspora.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Sing’oei said the opening of the consulate marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s diplomatic engagement with China and aligns with the government’s efforts to position foreign missions as drivers of economic growth.

“It is an honour to officially inaugurate Kenya’s Consulate General in Guangzhou, one of China’s most dynamic economic centres,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by Kenya’s Ambassador to China, Willy Bett; Consul General James Muhati; senior officials from the Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government; members of the diplomatic corps; business leaders; and representatives of the Kenyan community in China.

The consulate will oversee Kenya’s diplomatic and consular interests in Guangdong, Fujian and Hainan provinces, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, an area regarded as one of China’s leading industrial and commercial hubs.

Government officials said the mission is expected to strengthen Kenya’s economic diplomacy by facilitating trade and investment while providing easier access to government services for Kenyans residing in the region.

“The Consulate General will bring consular services closer to Kenyans living, studying and working across southern China, while also facilitating services for Chinese partners engaged in trade and investment with Kenya,” Sing’oei said.

Before the establishment of the Guangzhou mission, Kenyans living in southern China relied on the embassy in Beijing for passport renewals, travel documents and other consular services, often travelling long distances to access them.

The government said the new office will significantly reduce those challenges by offering services within the region, including passport processing, emergency assistance, travel documentation and other consular support.

Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, is one of China’s largest commercial centres and hosts a sizeable African business community. It is also a major destination for Kenyan traders seeking manufactured goods and building supply chain partnerships with Chinese companies.

Officials said the mission is expected to provide institutional support for Kenyan exporters, importers and investors while creating a more efficient channel for Chinese businesses exploring opportunities in Kenya.

The opening comes as Kenya continues to strengthen its strategic partnership with China, one of its largest trading partners and a major source of investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, technology and industrial development.

Sing’oei said the government is committed to ensuring Kenya’s diplomatic missions contribute directly to national development by promoting trade, investment and opportunities for citizens abroad.

“The opening of this mission demonstrates Kenya’s commitment to aligning its diplomatic presence with its economic priorities and ensuring our citizens abroad receive efficient and accessible services,” he said.

Beyond facilitating commerce, the Guangzhou Consulate is expected to strengthen engagement with the Kenyan diaspora by improving access to government services and enhancing support for citizens living, studying and working in southern China.
