Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia and India are expanding digital cooperation into artificial intelligence research, technology development and innovation, opening a new phase in their partnership, Indonesia’s deputy communications minister said.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said both countries could advance collaboration through joint research, talent development, digital infrastructure and technologies benefiting the public.

“India and Indonesia are not competitors chasing the same narrow path in AI. We complement each other,” Nezar said in Jakarta on Saturday.

He made the remarks during an event titled “An Overview of the AI Roadmap of Indonesia” held on Friday, July 31.

Nezar described India as a natural partner with extensive experience developing digital public infrastructure, while Indonesia offers a large population and strategic resources to support AI adoption.

He said Indonesia’s AI Roadmap regulation provides a foundation for turning bilateral cooperation into more concrete projects and initiatives.

Indonesia does not want to remain only a consumer of global AI technologies, Nezar said, adding that the government is strengthening software, computing capacity, data centers and digital talent.

The deputy minister said Indonesia has key advantages for building an AI ecosystem, including nickel and critical mineral reserves, a young population and a strategic Indo-Pacific location.

Momentum for closer Indonesia-India ties was strengthened by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent state visit to Indonesia, which produced 16 new agreements.

Both countries are also working to deepen digital economy cooperation through digital payment integration and development of the Indonesia Open Network as a foundation for AI collaboration.

Nezar called for greater cooperation through AI researcher exchanges, startup development and increased research and development investment by Indian technology companies in Indonesia.

He said the ministry remains committed to ensuring the partnership delivers tangible benefits for citizens of both countries while supporting Indonesia’s 2045 Golden Indonesia vision.
