US President Donald Trump has long proclaimed, without evidence, that America’s 2020 presidential election was stolen. In a July 16 prime-time address reflecting that obsession, he singled out China for criticism, alleging it manipulated vote-casting and vote-tabulation.
Trump’s assertions of actual Chinese interference, however, like much of the speech, were vague, undocumented, or manifestly untrue. Whether Trump believes his own charges against China is unclear, and is certainly not evidenced by his broader China policies, especially his looming Washington summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
