Tangshan Steel Production Cuts: 20% Blast Furnace Reduction Announced – News and Statistics

Jul 25, 2026

The Chinese city of Tangshan has announced a temporary reduction in steel production, according to a report by Steel Orbis citing industry sources. Local steelworks have been instructed to suspend or scale back operations from July 25 until midday on July 29. Under the directive, blast furnaces must lower output by 20 percent, while sintering plants and lime kilns face a 40 percent reduction.

Steelworks have confirmed receipt of the relevant notification. Some facilities have already halted production to conduct maintenance on their blast furnaces, while others plan to adjust output volumes in line with the requirements or rotate downtime among blast furnaces. Separately, certain Chinese steelworks voluntarily began maintenance work as early as the beginning of July, aiming to minimize losses and ease supply-side pressure on the market.

Demand for steel within the country remains limited at present, and this condition is expected to continue in the near term. One source told Steel Orbis that the production cuts were anticipated, and that prices for steel products may only shift if the cost of coke and iron ore declines.

Data for the first half of 2026 shows that China reduced its steel output by 3 percent year-on-year, to 499.95 million tonnes. Pig iron production fell by 2.8 percent year-on-year, to 426.64 million tonnes, while rolled steel production decreased by 0.9 percent year-on-year, to 718.78 million tonnes.
