Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has welcomed the United Kingdom’s decision to recognize the State of Palestine and support the realization of a two-state solution.

“Our shared task now is to match recognition with protection: of civilians, humanitarian access, and the path toward a two-state solution,” Sugiono said in an official statement released here on Thursday.

During the recent ASEAN-UK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, he emphasized that the UK carries a special responsibility as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to advocate for a just and sustainable peace.

He stated that Southeast Asian countries stand ready to support the UK in achieving this goal, reflecting ASEAN’s consistent commitment to promoting peaceful dialogue and international cooperation.

“Consistency is the currency of credibility. That consistency is what ASEAN also offers the world: a platform for collaboration, not an arena for rivalry,” Sugiono remarked.

The meeting, held in Manila, the Philippines, on Wednesday (July 22), adopted the “Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN–United Kingdom Dialogue Partnership 2027-2031” and the “ASEAN-UK Joint Ministerial Statement on Cooperation on the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific: Advancing Together.”

Both documents will serve as guidelines for strengthening ASEAN-UK cooperation across various sectors, including peace and security, transnational crime prevention, green transition, connectivity, and human capital development.

At the meeting, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband reaffirmed the UK’s long-term commitment to enhancing cooperation with ASEAN while also calling for the peaceful resolution of international disputes.

The UK officially announced its recognition of Palestine on September 21, 2025. The declaration was made by then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of the 2025 United Nations General Assembly.

The UK government stated that the recognition was part of its commitment to safeguarding the prospects of a two-state solution. The objectives of the move include ending the war in Gaza, halting the construction of various illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and encouraging internal reforms on the Palestinian side.
