Lenny Kravitz reveals why he works out in leather pants and skips breakfast

Lenny Kravitz has never been one to follow fitness trends, and his body speaks for itself.  At 62, the singer looks better than most men, with little body fat, chiseled abs, and a rock-solid physique. His workouts wearing anything but gym clothes have gone viral, and there’s constant speculation on whether he’s getting extra help along the way.

In a cover story for Men’s Health, the rock icon shared the secrets to his famously sculpted physique, revealing that it isn’t expensive treatments, trendy gadgets, or drugs.

Instead, it’s discipline, consistency,y and one very unusual workout habit – training in leather pants. “I perform onstage in leather, denim, whatever, so those are the pants I wear to train,” Kravitz told the outlet. “It also means I can fit in a workout anytime, anywhere.”

The singer says it’s simply part of his routine. In fact, he doesn’t rely on fitness trackers or smart watches to measure his progress either.

Instead, he lets his size 28 pants do the talking. “I can gauge everything by how I am in my pants,” he explained. “If my pants are a little tight, I know I’m getting outta shape.”

The philosophy even comes with a celebrity-approved motto courtesy of his longtime friend Denzel Washington. “The pants don’t lie.”

His workout routine

Kravitz’s workouts are just as intentional as his wardrobe. He trains five or six days a week, concentrating on two or three body parts with 8 to 10 main exercises. His sessions typically last between 45 minutes and an hour, and instead of resting in between sets, he does some abs.

But despite the impressive physique that’s made him a fixture in thirst traps and social media discussions, packing on muscle has never been the goal. “I’m not looking to be big or bulky,” he said. “I want a very narrow silhouette, more like Spider-Man meets Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee looked good in clothes. He’s bad—a thin, cool guy who obviously had muscle tone and who moved and flowed really gracefully.”

His lean frame has become so talked about that fans regularly question whether it’s completely natural. Kravitz says it is. “All this is natural: no peptides, no human growth hormone, no testosterone,” he said, while adding that he doesn’t judge people who choose a different path.

“There’s nothing wrong if people want to do those things. But there’s an alternative. You can do it naturally with exercise and food.”

Of course, that approach requires patience. “Is it harder? Yes. Does it take more work? Yes. But that’s how I choose to do it, and it’s 100 percent attainable.”

His diet

What he puts in his body is just as important. Kravitz revealed he usually doesn’t eat anything until mid-afternoon, not because he’s intentionally intermittent fasting, but because that’s simply how his body works.

“It’s not because I’m trying to intermittent fast; it’s just the way I am,” he explained. “I can’t get up and, like, eat.” When he finally does have his first meal, it’s typically an egg white omelet loaded with vegetables, followed by a protein shake and later a salad.  His diet is mostly vegan and low in carbohydrates, although he admits he still enjoys eggs.

As for cheat meals? Those usually revolve around one thing. “Bread, croissants, pasta.” Kravitz has credited his healthy lifestyle to lessons he learned long before he became a rock star, and his grandfather, Albert Roker, is a constant reference.

He’s recalled growing up with early-morning chores, bike rides, and constant reminders that success starts with discipline. “You must build on a strong foundation,” his grandfather told him. “If the foundation ain’t strong, the house is going to fall down.”

Today, Kravitz applies that lesson to every part of his fitness routine. “Fitness is the house; discipline is the foundation,” he said. “It’s the work you do when no one is watching. It’s figuring out how you’re going to squeeze in a workout no matter what else you have going on that day or night.”
