China Steel Exports Drop 5.6% in H1 2026; Iron Ore Imports Rise – News and Statistics

China’s steel exports experienced a decline in the first half of 2026, according to data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), which cited customs service figures. The country shipped 54.87 million tonnes of steel abroad during the January-to-June period, representing a 5.6% decrease compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.

In June 2026 alone, exports totaled 10.32 million tonnes. This figure was 0.2% lower than the previous month but rose by 6.6% year-on-year. The average price for these exports during the first half stood at $710.8 per tonne, which was 1.9% higher than the month prior.

On the import side, China brought in 2.69 million tonnes of steel in the first six months of 2026, a drop of 11.3% year-on-year. June imports were recorded at 441,000 tonnes, down 2.2% from May and 6.2% lower than June 2025. The average price for imported steel during the period was $1,925.4 per tonne.

Iron ore imports into China in June reached 112.7 million tonnes, a 15.3% increase compared to the previous month. The average price for these imports was $103.3 per tonne, up 0.3% month-on-month. For the first half of 2026, total iron ore imports amounted to 628.87 million tonnes, a 6.3% rise year-on-year.

An analyst from the consultancy Shanghai Metals Market, Qingwei Xie, commented that supplies rose in June as some mining companies intensified efforts to meet quarterly targets, while certain mines increased their output.

For context, by the end of 2025, China had boosted its steel exports by 7.5% year-on-year to a record 119.02 million tonnes. Those overseas shipments helped the country offset a slowdown in domestic demand. Steel imports into China in 2025 totaled 6.06 million tonnes, down 11.1% year-on-year.
