Indonesia trials national park visitor cap

Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has introduced a1 000-visitor daily quota for Komodo National Park.

Located in the centre of the Indonesian archipelago, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its population of wild Komodo dragons.

“Our decision to limit the tourist quota is based on research showing that long-term overtourism will result in damage to the area and the loss of its tourist attractions,” said Minister of Forestry Raja Antoni.

The limit applies to Padar Island, Rinca Island and Komodo Island, as well as 23 surrounding dive sites.

According to Antara News, officials at the Komodo National Park Agency said the visitor cap was introduced after nearly 430 000 tourists visited the park in 2025, exceeding its estimated annual carrying capacity of 380 000 visitors.

The ministry said it would regularly review the visitor quota to ensure it remained effective.
