Chongqing — Held in Kuala Lumpur on June 23, the China (Chongqing)-Malaysia Belt and Road Science and Technology Cooperation Exchange Conference brought together government, academic, and innovation leaders from China and Malaysia to deepen cross-border technology collaboration.

Participants explored ways to leverage Chongqing’s position as a regional innovation hub and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor to strengthen China-Malaysia technology cooperation. Future collaboration is expected to expand in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, aerospace, and new energy vehicles.

Dr. Muaz Mohd Zaini Makhtar of Universiti Sains Malaysia outlined Malaysia’s science and technology policies, industrial landscape, and opportunities for China-Malaysia joint research.

Lai Tak Fatt, Honorary Chairman of the Malaysia-China Silk Route Business Chamber, discussed practical pathways for Malaysian companies to expand into Chongqing and for Chongqing technologies to enter ASEAN markets through technology transfer and commercialization.

The conference saw the launch of the China (Chongqing)-Malaysia Technology Transfer Center and a Malaysian branch of the Chengdu-Chongqing Belt and Road International Technology Transfer Center. Supported by three Malaysian and two Chongqing-based institutions, the partnership creates a long-term framework for cross-border technology transfer and commercialization.

The conference also featured a series of thematic presentations centered on two-way technology matching between Chongqing and Malaysia across multiple sectors.

Chongqing teams presented technologies including AI visual quality inspection, animal health, traditional medicine, aerospace, and intelligent vehicle manufacturing, drawing strong interest from Malaysian companies in related sectors.

Following its launch, the Malaysian branch is expected to serve as a regional platform for technology exchange, promoting the transfer of Chongqing technologies to Southeast Asia while introducing Malaysian research to the Chengdu-Chongqing region. Both sides also plan to deepen collaboration through joint research, joint laboratories, and cross-border innovation incubation.
