US officials are preparing an early 2027 presidential trip to India, while negotiating a final trade deal and expanding energy cooperation.
The United States is working on organizing a visit by President Donald Trump to India at the beginning of next year, while also aiming to finalize a bilateral trade agreement in the coming weeks or months.
The U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told India’s IANS news agency about these plans.
In an interview published on Saturday, Rubio said that he plans to return to India later this year to prepare for Trump’s visit.
He emphasized that trade talks between the U.S. and India are in the final stages, and expressed optimism that a deal could be reached in the near future.
Rubio also stressed Washington’s desire to strengthen its role in meeting India’s growing energy needs and the possibility of increasing global oil supplies. He noted that the United States could assist this, notably through Venezuela, since Indian refineries are capable of processing heavy Venezuelan crude using modern equipment.
Trump noted that they had a very good conversation.

Context of the development of relations and future plans
In the context of developing U.S.-India relations, they have recently faced tariffs imposed by the United States and disagreements over purchases of Russian oil, but both countries continue to engage in dialogue on further energy and trade cooperation.
India has also expressed interest in a Trump visit with partners from Japan and Australia; Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Trump last week during the G7 summit in France. According to Trump himself, the conversation was very good.
In previous remarks, the U.S. leader said he planned to visit Turkey and make another trip to China this year.
Current efforts are focused on aligning trade agreements with enhanced energy cooperation to strengthen the U.S.-India strategic partnership.
