Three gold miners have been killed and four others injured after being buried in a landslide at an illegal mining site in Indonesia’s Aceh province.

The incident occurred on June 16 at a manually dug gold mining pit located inside an oil palm plantation area in the Aceh Jaya district, foreign media reports.

Julian Zairi of the Aceh Jaya police said the victims were involved in illegal mining activities at the site when the collapse occurred.

Authorities said the unlicensed mining operation had been underway for about six days prior to the accident. Residents had previously been warned against mining in the area, and officials said efforts are now being made to shut down illegal operations.

Investigations are ongoing, while rescue and recovery teams continue work at the site.
