Dar Zaghawa Under Sustained Attack: The UAE-Backed RSF Expands Its Genocidal Campaign Against the People of Sudan in Darfur

The continuing attacks by the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against civilian communities in North Darfur are raising grave concerns about the escalating targeting of Dar Zaghawa and the people of Sudan who call the region home.

Yesterday, the town of Kurnoy came under attack, with reports indicating that at least seven civilians were killed. Today, further attacks were reported against Orshi Dam (Khazzan Orshi), an important civilian water source relied upon by local communities in the area. These attacks are not isolated incidents.

They form part of a broader genocidal campaign that has targeted the people of Sudan in Darfur through killings, forced displacement, starvation, destruction of infrastructure, and attacks on civilian communities. The repeated targeting of towns, villages, water sources, and population centres reflects a pattern that has become tragically familiar across Darfur.

The people of Dar Zaghawa have been living under this threat for years. What is unfolding today is not a new phenomenon, but a continuation of a campaign that has devastated communities across Darfur and left millions displaced, impoverished, and vulnerable.

The significance of the attacks on Kurnoy and Orshi extends beyond the immediate loss of life and destruction. They raise serious concerns about the continuing effort to weaken, displace, and terrorise civilian populations through sustained attacks on communities and essential infrastructure.

The international community should pay close attention to these developments. The same patterns that preceded major atrocities elsewhere in Darfur, including El-Fasher, are visible today: attacks on civilian areas, pressure on local populations, destruction of essential infrastructure, and a growing climate of fear among communities.

The attacks in Dar Zaghawa are taking place within the wider context of a regionalised war that increasingly extends beyond Darfur itself. In North Kordofan, particularly in Al-Obeid, civilians have repeatedly come under drone attacks that have claimed lives and spread fear among local communities. Across Sudan, concerns continue to grow regarding the role of foreign fighters, external supply networks, and cross-border support mechanisms. Reports from different regions have pointed to the involvement of mercenaries and external logistical routes that sustain military operations, including supply corridors through neighbouring countries.

For many Sudanese, these developments reinforce the belief that the war is no longer driven solely by local actors. Rather, it has become a campaign sustained through a wider network of regional support that has enabled the UAE-backed RSF militia to continue its operations against the people of Sudan.

Yet despite extensive documentation of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of genocide, meaningful action remains absent. The perpetrators continue to operate while civilians continue to pay the price.

For many Sudanese, this failure goes beyond inaction. It reflects an international unwillingness to confront those enabling and sustaining the campaign. Serious questions continue to be raised regarding the role of the United Arab Emirates in financing, arming, and supporting the RSF, while calls for accountability have repeatedly failed to produce action commensurate with the scale of the crimes.

What is happening in Kurnoy, Orshi, and other parts of North Darfur should not be viewed as separate incidents. They are part of a continuing genocidal campaign directed against the people of Sudan in Darfur, one that has already brought immense suffering to the region and continues to threaten countless civilian lives.

The people of Sudan deserve more than expressions of concern.

They deserve protection.

They deserve accountability.

They deserve justice.

Our demands remain clear:

  • The RSF militia must be designated as a terrorist organisation.
  • The United Arab Emirates and all actors enabling and sustaining this campaign must be held accountable.
  • Urgent humanitarian assistance must reach civilians, displaced communities, and refugees without delay.
  • The networks of financing, arms transfers, logistical support, and political protection that sustain this war must be confronted and dismantled.

Without decisive action, the genocidal campaign being waged by the UAE-backed RSF militia will continue to claim lives, destroy communities, and deepen one of the gravest humanitarian catastrophes of our time.
