TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A crowd of students from the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI) was intercepted by security forces in the Semanggi area, Central Jakarta, on Friday, June 12, 2026. The student bloc intended to stage a rally dubbed “Aksi Menuju Indonesia Bangkrut” (towards Indonesia’s bankruptcy) at HI Roundabout, Central Jakarta, on Friday afternoon, June 12, 2026.
“It is true that the students were blocked by the authorities,” said the Chairperson of the UI Faculty of Law Student Executive Board, Anandaku Dimas Rumi, when contacted on Friday, June 12, 2026.
As many as 1,000 UI students are expected to participate in today’s protest at HI Roundabout, Jakarta, this afternoon. Since Friday morning, they had been gathering at the FISIP UI parking lot in Depok before departing for Bundaran HI in buses split into several convoys.
Dimas noted that around a hundred UI students traveled by bus but were ultimately halted by security forces. As of press time, there is no further information regarding this blockade. Tempo contacted the Head of the Public Relations Division of the Jakarta Metro Police, Grand Commissioner Budi Hermanto, for clarification on the matter, but he has yet to respond.
Chairperson of BEM UI Yatalathof Ma’shum Imawan previously stated that the coalition agreeing to join the rally includes the UI BEM Alliance, comprising BEM UI and 15 faculty-level student boards, alongside BEM KM IPB, BEM PNJ, BEM Pancasila University, the Gunadarma University BEM Alliance, FMN Center, FMN UI, Pembebasan, and Semar UI.
“Several organizations and movement nodes that participated in the national consolidation at the UI Campus yesterday are still confirming their attendance and estimated participant numbers in tonight’s meeting,” Yatalathof or Athof said.
He outlined five demands that will be voiced during the demonstration: an end to state budget mismanagement, a cut in the prices of basic commodities and fuel, and a halt to both the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) Program and the construction of the Red and White Village Cooperatives.
“Stop militarism in the civil domain, and finally, Prabowo must stop evading responsibility and acknowledge the government’s mistakes,” he stated.
