Automotive Glass Manufacturing in India: Growth Drivers and Future Outlook

Indian automobile industry acts as one of the important pillars that assist in sustaining the overall manufacturing process in the country. The industry manufactured 3.10 crore units of vehicles, which included commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, three wheelers, and quadricycles, in FY25 in comparison to 2.84 crore units manufactured during FY24. Indian automobile sector accounts for 7.1% share in the global GDP and ranks fourth globally in terms of vehicle manufacturing.

The production of automotive glass operates as a specialized segment. The market includes products which range from laminated windshields to tempered sidelites and advanced acoustic and solar-control glazing solutions. The automotive glass market demands specialized manufacturing processes which require high-precision technology. The automotive glass industry in India will experience increased value creation because vehicle production will expand while consumers will select higher-end products.

Market Outlook and Industry Overview

Market Outlook and Industry Overview

As per IMARC Group, the automotive glass market in India was valued at US$ 948.73 million (Rs. 8,347 crore) in 2025 and projected to reach US$ 1,433.66 million (Rs. 13,189 crore) by 2034 with a CAGR of 4.30% between 2026 and 2034.

This consistent growth trajectory is positively correlated with India’s vehicle base. With over 0.53 crore vehicle exports in FY25, India has a strong global footprint. As OEM production and replacement cycles expand, demand is rising for both original equipment glass and aftermarket replacement glass. The flat glass market in India which supplies glass to other industries reached a market value of around US$ 3.7 billion (Rs. 34,010 crore) in 2024 and is projected to grow to US$ 6.3 billion (Rs. 57,910 crore) by 2033 because of increasing demand from automotive and construction industries. The glass industry demonstrates positive growth through capacity expansion and technological innovations which benefit the entire sector.

Large amounts of energy are required for automotive glass manufacturing, as float glass production is dependent mostly on natural gas-powered furnaces operating at high temperatures. Energy expenses are considered an essential cost factor that influences both pricing competitiveness and export potential in international markets.

Structural Importance Within the Auto Component Industry

India’s auto component industry generated a turnover of US$ 78.7 billion (Rs. 6.73 lakh crore) in FY25 and demonstrated a 14% compound annual growth rate in recent years. The automotive glass sector which provides minimal value currently is expected to experience advantages from increased localized production, intricate design requirements and stricter regulatory standards.

The report from NITI Aayog titled Automotive Industry: Powering India’s Participation in Global Value Chains reveals that India has potential to expand into high-value component manufacturing because the auto component industry will increase to US$ 145 billion (Rs. 13.33 lakh crore) by 2030. The automotive glazing industry has developed sensor-compatible windshields which serve as vital elements for upcoming advanced technical challenges.

Government Initiatives Supporting Manufacturing

The Indian automotive glass sector is gaining advantages from governmental policies which aim to boost local production capabilities while enhancing safety requirements and increasing international trade competitiveness. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobiles and Auto Components drives advanced automotive manufacturing through its financial rewards system which supports domestic production of high-value components including specialised and value-added glass materials such as coated acoustic and sensor-compatible glazing solutions.

The AIS-037/IS glazing standards establish safety requirements for windscreens and windows which OEMs must meet to achieve their required quality standards. Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) star rating system implementation will result in increased use of laminated sidelights and improved roof strength which adds new technical demands for glazing systems. The Vehicle Scrappage Policy will create increased demand for new vehicles which meet safety standards.

The Automotive Mission Plan 2026 aims to establish India as the third most important automotive manufacturing center in the world while the FAME-II scheme which has a budget exceeding US$ 1.09 billion (Rs. 10,000 crore) has boosted electric vehicle adoption which has created a need for advanced glazing products.

Competitive Landscape

The capital-intensive requirements of float glass production and advanced processing methods together with OEM certification standards which manufacturers must meet create a situation where India needs to maintain its automotive glass market as a consolidated market. Asahi India Glass (AIS) is the dominant organized player in the passenger car OEM market because it controls more than 70% of this segment and more than 40% of the aftermarket. AIS has established its national presence and enhanced its supply chain security through its manufacturing plants located in Bawal, Roorkee, Chennai and Taloja.

The organized manufacturers who possess advanced technology will continue to grow because safety regulations become stricter and value-added glazing products become more popular. India accounts for approximately 3% of the worldwide traded auto parts market, which creates substantial opportunities for business expansion in advanced automotive glazing and high-precision export markets.

Outlook and Road Ahead

The automotive glass manufacturing sector in India is expected to evolve in line with the country’s automotive industry. As India shifts away from a volume-driven business model toward more sophisticated manufacturing systems, the sector is likely to advance accordingly. India’s glass manufacturing ecosystem supports the automotive industry, which is projected to grow over the next decade.

Modern automotive industry requires manufacturers to concentrate on the production of sophisticated products in lieu of the standard products that were being made before. Auto-glass makers that adapt to new trends in terms of safety considerations, localization, and exports will reap rewards because of this. On the other hand, sustainability is an emerging trend that is impacting the demand for glazing products. The manufacturers have been making efforts towards developing lightweight and solar control glass products because these are helping to increase the mileage of electric vehicles and assisting in the decarbonization process at the global level. In the coming years, there will be a massive change witnessed in the automobile industry, owing to increased vehicle manufacturing and advanced technologies being developed domestically.
