Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held talks with senior executives from China Energy and the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute (EPPEI) to explore opportunities for expanding cooperation in renewable energy integration, power grid modernisation, energy storage systems, and long-term electricity sector planning.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, brought together China Energy Chairperson Ni Zhen, EPPEI President Hu Ming, and senior officials from Egypt’s electricity sector.

Discussions focused on strengthening technical cooperation to support Egypt’s energy transition strategy and enhance the national grid’s capacity to accommodate growing volumes of renewable energy generation.

During the meeting, Esmat reviewed Egypt’s efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix in line with the country’s National Energy Strategy. He noted that the Ministry is working to raise the contribution of renewable energy to 45% of total electricity generation by 2028.

He stressed that achieving this target requires advanced technological solutions to facilitate renewable energy integration, improve grid flexibility, expand energy storage capacity, and enhance the efficiency of electricity transmission networks.

The talks explored opportunities for cooperation in power network planning and development, integration of renewable energy projects into the national grid, deployment of energy storage technologies, transmission network upgrades, electricity market development, and long-term energy planning.

In addition, discussions addressed the localisation of renewable energy-related industries, technology transfer, strengthening domestic supply chains, and supporting training and capacity-building programmes.

Officials reviewed EPPEI’s experience as one of China’s leading institutions in energy planning and policy development. The institute has played a key role in formulating China’s national power sector strategies, implementing electricity market reforms, developing major west-to-east power transmission corridors, and advancing large-scale clean energy projects.

Esmat said Egypt’s national energy strategy and ongoing renewable energy projects indicate that clean energy could account for around 45% of the country’s energy mix within the next two years. He emphasised that the government is taking the necessary steps to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the electricity system while accelerating the integration of renewable energy sources.

The minister also highlighted the growing contribution of Chinese companies to Egypt’s solar and wind energy projects, noting that energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 14,320 MWh are planned by 2028.
