JAKARTA – The Malaysian government is preparing a new step to maintain oil supplies amid global uncertainty due to the West Asian conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Malay Mail, Saturday, May 9, quoting Bernama, reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to announce the plan in mid-May.
Malaysian Economic Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the government’s main focus was to ensure that domestic oil supplies remained secure so that economic activities were not disrupted. The government previously said that the existing reserves were sufficient until June.
According to Akmal, Petronas is now in the final stages of securing new supply sources.
“The previous Prime Minister said that several new sources are being matured. He is expected to convey the next schedule regarding the country’s oil supply,” said Akmal in the Energy Crisis 2026: Are We Ready to Rethink Refuel? forum in Kuala Lumpur.
He said Malaysia’s current operational reserves are still sufficient. The government has also prepared intervention and operational management measures to deal with potential supply disruptions.
In addition to domestic steps, Malaysia also sees regional cooperation as a way to strengthen energy supply resilience. Akmal said there was discussion on regional energy reserves at the ASEAN level, although the mechanism and framework still needed to be discussed further because it was related to inter-state diplomacy.
Regarding biodiesel B15, which is a mixture of 15 percent biodiesel in solar, the Malaysian government is optimistic that its implementation can begin on June 1. The policy is expected to help extend the national diesel supply.
According to Akmal, the biodiesel supply chain, including distribution to fuel filling stations, is ready and has the support of relevant ministries and agencies.
