Dubai to transform tunnels into public art spaces — artists invited to participate

RTA and Dubai Culture will convert more than 40 tunnels into creative landmarks as part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.

Soon, tunnels in Dubai will no longer simply be places to pass through – they’re going to become places to remember. And if you’re an artist, you can directly help make this happen.

For the first time, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is collaborating with Dubai Culture and Arts Authority to transform the city’s tunnels into creative public art canvases. The initiative begins with 15 tunnels and is set to expand, in future phases, across more than 40 tunnels.

Yesterday, the RTA announced the initiative on its social channels and called on artists to register. The post said: “Artists interested in participating in the upcoming phases are invited to stay tuned for registration details.”

Further details on the process to apply will be announced later, by the authorities.

The first phase of the project began with three tunnels, featuring 12 artists. The second phase included five tunnels, with six artists participating. More details will be announced as the project heads into phase three.

Transforming the city’s tunnels into art installations is part of Dubai’s Architectural Identity initiative – a comprehensive framework for infrastructure elements, such as bridges and tunnels, ensuring visual and functional harmony across all projects.

It also aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which seeks to elevate quality of life in the city, reinforce its aesthetic identity and enhance efficiency through designs inspired by the region’s distinctive architectural heritage.
