U.S. domestic raw steel output climbed to 1,856,000 net tons in the seven-day period ending May 2, 2026, as reported by industry data cited by Scrap Monster. The capability utilization rate reached 80.4 percent, up from 75.4 percent in the corresponding week of 2025, when production totaled 1,694,000 net tons. This represents a 9.6 percent year-over-year gain.

Compared with the prior week ending April 25, 2026, output advanced 1.4 percent from 1,830,000 net tons, while utilization rose from 79.3 percent.

For the year to date through May 2, 2026, cumulative production hit 31,405,000 net tons at a 77.9 percent utilization rate, marking a 6.2 percent increase from 29,582,000 net tons during the same stretch last year.

Regional performance was robust across key districts. The North East contributed 134 thousand net tons, the Great Lakes 511 thousand, the Midwest 311 thousand, the Southern district 838 thousand, and the Western district 62 thousand, aggregating to a weekly total of 1,856 thousand net tons.

Industry analysts pointed to consistent improvements in steel output, underpinned by elevated capacity usage and sustained demand from construction and manufacturing sectors. The latest figures underscore ongoing recovery momentum in U.S. steel production trends for 2026. The market outlook remains cautiously optimistic, supported by stable pricing and strengthening industrial activity nationwide.
