Railway digitalization in Indonesia is moving forward. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), the country’s national railway operator, signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk and Huawei. The agreement focuses on improving railway safety, raising operational efficiency, and enhancing the passenger experience. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

As described in a Huawei announcement, the cooperation includes the development of modern ICT infrastructure for rail operations. It covers highly reliable communication networks and advanced wireless coverage at stations and depots. Also, cloud-based solutions are designed to support service continuity and operational flexibility.

5G and AI in Indonesia’s rail system

At the centre of the partnership are railway-focused 5G networks based on the FRMCS standard. These networks are intended to enable advanced multimedia applications. They are also intended to contribute to better safety, efficiency, and service quality. A pilot project on the Rangkasbitung–Tanah Abang line will test technologies for level crossing safety. It will also test intelligent rail traffic control.

Separately, the companies will also work on applying artificial intelligence to freight train inspections. Through video analysis, the system is intended to detect defects automatically. It is also intended to reduce reliance on manual checks. The approach is intended to allow problems to be identified quickly through real-time alerts. In addition, the cooperation covers communication infrastructure, safety testing, traffic control, and freight train inspection.

Railway digitalization in Indonesia and future operations

Representatives of the three companies describe the partnership as an important step in Indonesia’s rail modernization. The project combines digital infrastructure, 5G technology, and railway operations expertise. It is expected to support the digital transformation of the national rail network. In addition, future areas of cooperation include intelligent dispatching and predictive maintenance. They also include integrated cloud platforms and next-generation railway communication systems. These areas are aimed at contributing to a safer, more efficient, and more modern transport system.

The initiative is also presented as having long-term strategic significance for Indonesia. It introduces a comprehensive model for digitalizing railway infrastructure. At the same time, real-time data, predictive analytics, and automation become central to daily operations. The model integrates 5G with artificial intelligence. It can shift the railway network from reactive operations to a more proactive model. Maintenance and operational decisions can then be optimized before problems arise. In the long term, this approach can help reduce costs and significantly improve service reliability.

The recent train accident in Indonesia resulted in 14 deaths. It has again highlighted the need to accelerate railway infrastructure digitalization. In this context, 5G and artificial intelligence are presented as monitoring and risk-reduction tools. They can support integrated warning and predictive decision-making systems. These systems may help prevent similar incidents.
