The United States and China have discussed preparations for an upcoming visit by Donald Trump to China, expected to take place in June.

Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, held talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, during which the planned visit was a key topic. The development was reported by Caliber.Az, citing a post by Bessent on the social media platform X.

“This morning, I convened talks with Vice Premier He Lifeng to discuss President Trump’s upcoming travel to China.

Our meeting was both candid and comprehensive, and I stressed that China’s recent provocative extraterritorial regulations have a chilling effect on global supply chains.

I look forward to a productive summit between President Trump and President Xi in Beijing,” he wrote.

By referring to “China’s recent provocative extraterritorial regulations,” Bessent was pointing to “supply chain security” rules that allow Chinese authorities to investigate the activities of foreign companies and impose measures on them if they are deemed to pose a threat to the country’s industrial and supply chain security, including operations conducted outside the People’s Republic of China.

Additional attention has also focused on amendments to China’s Foreign Trade Law, which came into force on March 1. These changes expand mechanisms for retaliatory measures against other countries and increase the government’s ability to restrict trade and market access. The measures are widely seen as targeting the US and the European Union, particularly in response to unilateral tariffs or sanctions imposed on China.
