Tinubu backs UAE in US-Iran war, condemns civilian attacks

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday expressed solidarity with the United Arab Emirates following attacks on its civilian and economic infrastructure.

Tinubu, in a post on his X handle, reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for global peace and stability, while condemning actions that threaten civilian populations and critical assets.

He also reaffirmed his support for his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the measures the UAE has taken to safeguard civilian populations and critical infrastructure.

“Nigeria is for global peace and stability and for its friends and partners anywhere.

“I am particularly concerned by the attacks on UAE’s civilian and economic infrastructure. I reaffirm my support and solidarity to the President of UAE and the measures he took to safeguard civilian populations and critical infrastructure,” the President wrote.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting the Gulf nation’s civilian population and key economic assets.

The ongoing conflict began in February, when the United States, working with Israeli forces, carried out strikes on Iran.

The operation, codenamed Operation Fury, was sanctioned by President Donald Trump in response to an alleged move by Iran to develop nuclear power.

Iran responded with widespread retaliatory missile and drone barrages across the region, including attacks on the UAE.

According to reports, the UAE’s air defence systems, including THAAD and Patriot batteries, have intercepted hundreds of projectiles, though some strikes caused civilian casualties, injuries, and damage to infrastructure in areas such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Initial diplomatic efforts ended in deadlock in Islamabad, Pakistan, while further talks are being considered.
