China-Japan tensions escalate after Taiwan Strait passage

April 20 (Asia Today) — Relations between China and Japan have continued to deteriorate since late 2025, with recent military and diplomatic developments raising concerns about further escalation.

Tensions intensified after remarks by Sanae Takaichi in November about possible Japanese involvement in a Taiwan contingency, which drew strong objections from China.

The latest flashpoint came Thursday when a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer transited the Taiwan Strait, prompting sharp criticism from Beijing.

Chinese officials and state media described the move as a deliberate provocation. The People’s Liberation Army warned in a social media statement that Japan would “bear the consequences” of its actions.

State broadcaster China Central Television said the timing of the transit coincided with the anniversary of the Treaty of Shimonoseki, calling it a symbolic and intentional challenge.

China has also taken economic and social measures in response. Authorities imposed export restrictions on key materials, including fluorine-related products, and advised citizens to limit travel and study in Japan. The number of Chinese visitors to Japan has dropped sharply in recent months, according to reports.

Japan has maintained that the naval transit was part of preparations for the Balikatan military exercises, a joint exercise led by the United States and its allies.

Analysts say the situation reflects deeper strategic rivalry. A Beijing-based Japan expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Japan would face challenges countering China without U.S. support and that public sentiment in Japan has grown increasingly negative toward China.

The standoff has led to increasingly sharp rhetoric from both sides, with little indication of near-term improvement in relations.

Observers say the current trajectory suggests prolonged tension, as both countries continue to assert their positions on regional security issues.
