Construction begins on phase one of a £1.9m stroke unit expansion and refurbishment

Work has started on a £1.9m project to refurbish and expand the stroke unit at Lincoln County Hospital, with contractor Henry Brothers appointed to deliver the scheme.

The project forms the first phase of a two-stage programme for United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The first phase will focus on expansion and reconfiguration of the Navenby Ward to increase treatment capacity.

This will involve merging two existing five-bay wards into a single Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), alongside alterations to ancillary areas and upgrades to mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

The project will also involve new internal finishes, including joinery, flooring, doors, ceilings, lighting and decoration throughout the ward.

Once the first phase of the project is completed, the second phase will focus on a full refurbishment of the existing stroke ward.

The refurbishment includes updating older rooms so they have the same equipment, layout, and “look and feel” as the new ones.

The project team will also make sure everything is up to 2026 codes for the existing facility, including infection control, patient dignity and ensuring the latest monitoring systems and data points for medical staff

The wider project team includes Day Architectural, providing architectural, project management and quantity surveying services, and DSSR, delivering M&E engineering.

Procurement route

United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust appointed Henry Brothers to the project under the Pagabo Refit and Refurbishment Framework.

The framework is a £1bn, OJEU-compliant procurement vehicle designed for UK public sector bodies to quickly appoint contractors for renovation, retrofitting, and interior fit-out projects.

In May 2023, 93 suppliers were appointed to the framework and it runs for four years.

The refurbishment of the stroke unit is part of a number of health schemes that Henry Brothers Construction is delivering in the East Midlands.

The firm recently completed a £12.8m urgent treatment centre and a £18m endoscopy unit at Leicester General Hospital, part of a larger £50m redevelopment effort to modernise urgent care and hospital facilities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

“[We are] currently delivering a number of healthcare schemes for hospitals across the East Midlands…we are extremely proud to play a part in supporting our local hospitals,” said Ian Taylor, Managing Director of Henry Brothers Construction.
