Jakarta (ANTARA) – The one-hour energy saving and carbon emission reduction initiative in Jakarta on the commemoration of World Environment Day on Saturday (June 13) was able to reduce carbon emissions by 60.14 tons of CO2e.

“The 60-minute lights-off campaign is not just a symbol. It is a reminder that simple actions can bring a real impact on environmental sustainability,” Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, said on Sunday.

He noted that the initiative aims to instill a culture of energy conservation and encourage the public to participate in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Data from the Greater Jakarta PLN Distribution Unit (PLN Disjaya) indicated that the blackout activity from 8:30-9:30 p.m. saved 75.18 MWh of electricity consumption and reduced electricity costs by Rp108,693,752 (US$5,800).

“The implementation of this activity refers to Governor’s Instruction Number 14 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Lights Outages for Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction, which is carried out periodically in Jakarta,” Gardesi explained.

According to him, the reduction in emissions shows that changes in energy consumption behavior can produce measurable results when implemented consistently and supported by broad participation.

“This success came from the collaboration of various parties, including building managers, business owners, communities, and residents who turned off unused lights and electronic devices during the action,” he continued.

The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to encourage energy-saving behaviors to become part of daily habits, from turning off unused electronic devices to using electricity wisely at home and in the workplace.

“When millions of citizens consistently take the same small steps, the impact will be significant for Jakarta’s environmental quality. Protecting the earth and providing cleaner air is not just the government’s responsibility, but a collective effort for all citizens,” he emphasized.

The energy saving activity took place at several strategic and iconic locations in Jakarta, including the National Monument (Monas), the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the welcoming statue at the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout, the General Sudirman Statue, and the Jakarta City Hall area.
