Foreign minister says both countries will pursue concrete cooperation while reaffirming commitment to diplomacy and regional stability
Indonesia is seeking to strengthen bilateral relations with Iran through a high-level visit to Mashhad, where Foreign Minister Sugiono met his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, to discuss regional developments and identify priority areas for deeper cooperation.
The meeting took place during an official visit by an Indonesian delegation to Iran, where representatives also paid respects following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both ministers exchanged views on regional and international developments while reaffirming their shared commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue, diplomacy, respect for sovereignty and international law.
Beyond geopolitical issues, the discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation through more concrete initiatives in sectors of mutual interest.
Sugiono encouraged both governments to maximize existing bilateral mechanisms to accelerate implementation of previously agreed programs and deliver tangible benefits for both countries.
Broader diplomatic engagement
The Indonesian delegation also included People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Ahmad Muzani, alongside representatives from Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) and Muhammadiyah.
The Foreign Ministry said the visit reflected Indonesia’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic engagement, promoting peace and expressing solidarity with the Iranian people.
During the visit, the delegation also met Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, expand exchanges between lawmakers and promote closer people-to-people relations.
First foreign delegation to pay respects
Iran had invited Indonesia to attend the official tribute for Ayatollah Khamenei at the Imam Reza shrine complex in Mashhad.
According to Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, the Indonesian delegation became the first official foreign delegation to pay respects at Khamenei’s tomb.
While the visit centered on expressing condolences, it also provided an opportunity for both governments to reaffirm diplomatic ties and explore ways to deepen cooperation amid evolving regional dynamics.
